NYC Cruisers Forum Meetup

Taking a cue from RainDog, anyone interested in meeting up?

Sandy Hook? Huntington/Northport? Someplace else?

Usually, with the tides going through the East River, LI Sound seems to be a three day weekend type deal for us. That said, great cruising up there. I have been meaning to check out the basin near the lighthouse out on Eastons Neck. I'm not sure if draft could be an issue for some people but it looks like a neat spot.

Horseshoe Bay down at Sandy Hook, being just a couple hours away, is our default location and is nice because it's big and usually not too crowded. It might be more condusive to rafting-up when compared to some of the North Shore locations.

Probably by the time the weather gets nice I should have an open-source anchor to show off for folks who are into that kind of thing....

...Sign me up. I sail out of Jamaica Bay and the Rockaway inlet to Breezy Point with an occasional longer sail to Sandy Hook. I'm planning a round the Island trip this June with a stop in Block Island then down the sound through Hell Gate and the East River and back. I hope to get in the water around the 1st of May. David

Name the place and date and I'll try to be there. I'm a Manhattanite from way back . . . East Village in the 80s and Upper West Side in the 90s. Got married in Central Park. But during all those years I never had a boat.

Gotta see that Open Source Anchor!

Let's see what the hive mind comes up with for a location. I'm down for whatever. Sandy Hook is easy for me but it's just a bay and a beach with distant lights on the opposite shore, so a bit primitive. Have to go down to the Highlands for civilization. Maybe folks want bars and restaurants, in which case the North Shore might be better. That said, rafting up off the OSA might be a fun test!

If you are considering Memorial Day weekend, maybe you should think about the south shore of LI...

Bethpage Air Show | at Jones Beach State Park

The Blue Angels are scheduled to perform again this year.

These are from the 2006 show:

There are some places on the inside to anchor out, but to really see the show, you need to be out in the ocean. And the anchorages near by will be insane. But there are a few others that not too far. Unfortunately there are not many marinas here with transient slips or a place that has a spot to go ashore with a dinghy.

Some places:
Bannister Creek - Nice little cove and can raft up there. Just inside the bridge from the ocean. Inlet was just dredged after Sandy. No dingy dock access though.

A Random Spot? - A couple comes here every summer and anchors out here and lives on the boat. Its a rough spot during the day with the power boaters throwing some wake, but calm at night. The couple takes there dinghy ashore here, I guess they worked out some deal with the owners.

Apache Yacht Club - AC doesnt list anything about transient slips, but I'm sure you can work something out with them. They also own Pop's Seafood Shack next door, so it will be noisy at night. Short walk to the train to NYC, bus, grocery store across the street. Beach is a 10 minute walk. Just on the other side of the car bridge there used to be a few places that would occasionaly allow transients, but since the Sandy I'm not sure.

Going over to the next inlet, Jones Intlet, you dont have many choices for marinas right there, but the show takes place at the beach just to the east of the inlet.

Town of Hempstead Marina East - The town's website says no transients. Not sure how true that is. They list 4 at Marina West, but to get to Jones Inlet you have to go through Sea Dog Creek which may or may not have shoaled up, and a draw bridge. A 6 foot draft could be a problem, which I'll find out in the spring! There website also lists transients at Guy Lambardo Marina in Freeport. There may be other places in Freeport to grab a slip too.

Zach's Bay - This place will be packed! There's not much there. But this is where the air show happens!

Another nice spot, but is a little out of the way is the Sore Thumb. I plan on spending a bunch of weekends here this summer. It's a nice little anchorage. It can get crowded during the day, but usually empties out at night. Don't raft up here, the local power boaters down on this shore are not the most curtious. They think nothing of throwing a wake right next to you. There really is nothing on shore here anymore. Just some expensive houses and a parking lot for the old OBI, and some dead hookers.

Just some ideas for you guys!
