Re: Boat Requirements for Scuba Diving

We have an air compressor on board, and SCUBA gear. Ends up using gear mostly for bottom cleaning of boat, and only some general diving. Do a lot more skin diving instead of SCUBA just because it's so much easier to do. Getting all the gear out, refilling tanks etc is a lot of work and many times best diving is right near surface anyway. I do SCUBA, and enjoy it, but do it much less than I had thought I would.

Re: Boat Requirements for Scuba Diving

Ironically, back when I was hardcore into diving, I use to travel to Belize to go diving. By the time I moved there, I didnt dive anymore (just snorkel).

The first time we took off and went cruising we took full dive gear...and made 1 dive. Second time only took snorkel gear. These days only snorkel. With a 3.5' draft I can even clean the bottom on snorkel only.

I have a bodega full of several complete sets of SCUBA gear which is probably all shot by now.

Anybody wanna a good deal on some gear? Guaranteed not used for a decade! ;-)

Re: Boat Requirements for Scuba Diving

As a counterpoise to some recent posts:

I am an avid diver, I enjoy free diving, spearfish only when free diving and having the compressor on board the boat is great advantage. When cruising in areas with decent diving its not unusual to do 1 to 3 dives per day and snorkel.

If the boat was large enough I would figure out a way to move the rebreathers, oxygen, Helium and Masterline booster to the boat.

Last dive - San Diego, Marine Room to Boundry Wall, Dive Xtras Beta test Piranha scooters, JJ Rebreather, 90 min Bottom Time, Max Depth 225 feet, 60 min deco.

I have scuba dove all over the world by yacht , exploring the best and remotest areas of the Pacific like Micronesia, Fiji, PNG, and Indonesia, dove the oldest archeological wreck near Bodrum Turkey in the Med, explored various parts of the beautiful Red Sea and Indian Ocean and like you….. sailing is a means to get to and stay at these premium dive sites and to discover new ones.

As a serious diver you know that the best dive sites are impossible anchorages for a displacement boat and come with big drop-offs, exposed reefs and strong currents to replenish the nutrients.

Drift diving thru passes adds another component which means your tender is the key to accessing premium dive sites.

It also requires topside support on the tender and careful dive planning to achieve the pinnacle of dive experiences.

Take a look at how these 4 or 5 sailors combined their resources to manage their primary scuba diving interest and it may give you a better idea and alternate thoughts about what is needed to do this safely.

My wife and I have 30k in our dive equipment, and another ten in a compressor.

That must include a bunch of high end U/W photography gear.

You may have seen these, if so I apologize. This is the best compact scuba compressor I've seen.

No, that's another ten, for one set.
