Attitude or Smart

Is it more important to have a good attitude while sailing or to be the smartest sailor on the seas?

Re: Attitude or Smart

Smart!!!
Although it shouldn’t have to be an either/or situation, knowledge trumps attitude, most cases, in the longer run.
Although we may (or may not*) be in charge of our attitudes, we can certainly increase our knowledge/learning/experience.

* Think: clinical depression.

Re: Attitude or Smart

I vote for attitude. Without the correct attitude, a person can't learn to become smart.

Re: Attitude or Smart

yes to both.

Besides you don't have to be the best sailor out there all the time. Only need to be the best when people are around.

You are mixing a superlative with a non-superlative...

You don't need the best of either (best attitude or smartest) but a liberal dose of both is important.

Smart is also a tough word. I know lots of smart people that are not learned or knowledgeable or do not apply their smarts. Maybe they have the wrong attitude...

Re: Attitude or Smart

Only have to be smarter than than the folks around you but you can buy smart, not sure if you can buy a good attitude and a good attitude goes a long way when you don't have (yet) the smarts.

Re: Attitude or Smart

I've always been told that I have a smart a$$ed attitude! Does that count as "both"?

Re: Attitude or Smart

In a bad situation give me a person with a good attitude over someone who thinks they're smart any day of the week. It's my who do I want in my fox hole scenario.

Re: Attitude or Smart

After a couple of drinks of rum, I think I am pretty darn smart.

Seriously, I doubt everyone is a smart sailor, some are pretty ignorant and have the attitude they know what they are doing. Just take a look around and watch people anchor or even pull into a slip at a marina.

Re: Attitude or Smart

A good dose of common sense and mechanical awareness goes a long way!

yep. On a good day it will take you ALL the way there.

On a bad one it will take you far enough to get out of (immediate) trouble.

And I can adjust my attitude , but I am only as smart as I was when I woke up this morning. That factor won't change fast enough to make a difference in a crisis...

One can change attitude but ya can't teach smart.

There's a big difference between thinking you're smart and being so.

IMHO: some people get better with age like a good wine, they 'mellow out' and emotional intelligence starts to come into play.

Just a observation as I journey through my latter half of my 30's.

But Im a old soul (so my wife says ).

Best regards,
-Jer
