I just bought a new
project. Had to dip into my
boat fund to do it, but I needed some transportation on land.
I found a 1966 C-10 Chevy 1/2 ton, stepside on Craigslist. I'd had one in high
school, and always regretted selling it. That one had a 250 straight 6 with a 3 on the tree. We bought it at a
government Army
auction in 1972 for $500. Had one bullet hole in the driver side
bed rail. I drove it until I got married in Colorado while in the Air Force.
This one was owned by a
mechanic, and had been his for 20+ years. In his 'elder age', he decided to beef her up a bit, as he wanted to pull a
trailer of some sort. Sadly, he passed away, and the
family sold her to me after 3 years. I'm not sure what the original
power plant was, but he installed (rather nicely, too) a 454 big block, put a one ton running
gear in it, and, a 9,00lb receiver mounted
winch. I can tell when he began failing, as his attention to detail waned. Particularly in the
wiring. I pulled a garbage can of wire out of it last week, discovering the stock harnesses were there pretty much intact.
I'd driven it home when I purchased it, and it didn't miss a beat, pulled the Siskiyous at 70-75mph, and only getting up to 220 degrees on the long grade. The radiator is seeping, and a new
core is outrageous, about $450 for a 4
core. I had to drive it right back down last weds., and having installed a new thermostat, she ran a nice 170 to 210 for the round trip.
I bought it because I can
work on it. No electronic gizmos or doo-dads to fail. I'm not planning on rodding it, I want a nice, dependable driver. It's already proven to be that.
I did buy a new
aluminum radiator for it, and that's today's
project. That and further mouse nest removal!!
Which brings me to a
boat subject.....
On one of the Chevy
forums, someone asked about undercoating and rust preventative. There was a pretty good review of a product called Rust Bullet.
Having been intrigued by Brent Swain's origami technique, and such, I was wondering if this is a product that would be known to the steelie's here on the forum. If it performs as claimed, would it would be better than
epoxy?
