Recreational Craft Directive (RCD) in the EU question

My partner and I are planning to cruise to the U.K. and Med from the USA a few years down the path. I know bringing a non-EU boat into the EU/EEA/Schengen areas is a challenge. I am looking for folks who have a similar profile (US citizens on non-EU boat wanting to cruise the Med) who have done it recently and can advise how to practically navigate the RCD without having to import or make the boat compliant. Your RYA website page says this about 40% down from the top


"boat does not need to comply with the RCD if it was/is:

• built in the EEA prior to 16 June 1998; or
• in use in the EEA prior to 16 June 1998; or
• only visiting the EEA for reasons of tourism or in transit (time scales are undefined); or
• an exemption listed below." I would think that you will be a tourist in transit?
