A droll story, but maybe a little too exaggerated. The unaided human eye can see stars brighter than apparent magnitude 6 or perhaps 6.5, of which there are somewhat fewer than 9100 in the entire sky (both hemispheres). I suppose you might have counted a few of them more than once.

I see no evidence that you both were counting in the same sky or relying on the same calendar.

The person who first uttered this American saying is lost to history. The fact that it's so well known is a good indication of the importance of empathy in living a meaningful life.
How many kilometers does it take to understand someone?

Re: Metric system dumbs us down.

Once worked with a fellow of last name Bentley (not his real name). He was known to be a bit difficult to work with. So we adopted a unit of measure for describing the difficulty in working with other people and stressful situations. The milli-Bentley has been used henceforth. No one else has even reached 100 milli-bentleys.

How many kilometers does it take to understand someone?

Short answer: If you are wearing their shoes, approximately, 1.6 kilometers.

That seems like a long way in shoes that might not fit.

Funny thing about Canada. All through the Maritimes last year I paid for slips and line by the foot, and when getting directions it was always in miles. One place even asked how many gallons of fuel I needed, even though the pump read liters. Only thing that messed me up was trying to buy deli meats in grams. Wonder what would have happened if I asked for a half-pound?

Base eight? I remember those dec days! I don't think there has been a base eight computer made in decades. We are showing our age when we even know about base eight over the common hexadecimal they actually use!

Unless it was a nautical mile you had to walk.

Re: Metric system dumbs us down.

Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes. Because then you'll be a mile away and you'll have their shoes.
