Re: Who's you favorite yacht architect?

I am not the only one that is disillusioned the way competition yachting is going in Australia.

"Wild Oats XI secured her sixth line honours victory under the guidance of ... a retractable forward rudder, two retractable daggerboards, canting keel, and the ".

"The supermaxi yacht Wild Oats XI is here at the museum for a short visit. ... spinnakers (which the crew control using hydraulic winches) and, the entire time the boat is racing, the engine is running to power the hydraulics".

It is expected the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia will change the Hobart race rules to allow a monohull yacht equipped with hydrofoils, provided it passes stability safety tests, to compete in next year’s race. Foil equipped monohulls will compete in the next America’s Cup in New Zealand in 2021 and the next edition of The Ocean Race.

Sadly the days of good looking yachts like Kialoa, Stormvogel, Greybeard, Condor, Ondine seem to be over.

Kialoa

Re: Who's you favorite yacht architect?

Well...Bill Lapworth designed my old Cal 25 which was my home for three years in my misspent youth, and Bob Perry designed my Tayana 37 which is going to be my home for the next 10+ years, so....those guys? ;-)

Roger Macgregor designed the trailer sailor I've got in Lake Travis...I think we can leave that off the list of "favorites", but I do love sailing it.

Re: Who's you favorite yacht architect?

I bet these yachts perform pretty well but they don't come across as "pretty". (If you want a performance yacht you will be quite prepared sacrifice looks)

Ben Lexan because he achieved what other designers had aspired to for over 130 years beating the NYYC on there own turf.

Re: Who's you favorite yacht architect?

I like many S&S boats designed in their Swan era.

I like new boats designed to sail and handle like a scaled down IMOCA or Class 40 boat.

example, a JP boat : https://www.jpdick-yachts.com/

I also like the Dutch luxury designers like Hoek, Dykstra, etc. They are so much above and beyond the HRs and the OYs of the middle class man!

I wish there existed a S&S looking like boat that sailed as easy and fast as a JP yacht and did not cost as much as a Dykstra one !!!

;-)
