If you are worring about the stainless fatiguing, use 17-4 PH stainless. Its over 3 times stronger than 300 series stainless. It can be a little expensive but it is nothing compaired to the price of your rig. When and if I redo my chainplates that is what I'll do it with. Besides, it will be cheaper than silicon/bronze or aluminium/silicon/bronze by far.

I found17-4 PH stainless on mcmaster.com. it's slightly more than twice as expensive thaan 316. They also have carbon fiber which is cheaper and kind of tempting too.


Do you have to heat-treat 17-4 PH to get the maximum strength?

They only sell metal from behind a desk and the people are in their 30's & 40's, some being women.

Since you appear to be in Pago Pago your best source may be South in New Zealand.
I replaced my rigging hardware with AB2, aluminium bronze and I am very happy with it. After 7 years there is no discoloration. My stainless chain plates were suffering from severe crevice corrosion; I would have preffered to replace with AB2, but since the chain plates were internal, and for economical reasons, I chose galvanized steel; followed by a light sand blasting; followed by an epoxy primer and then a polyurethane top coat.
For information on Al bronze contact John Abbot at Montrose Foundry in Auckland; a good guy to deal with and very knowlegable.

Also there is a machine shop on Leary Way and NW 46th Street
