Varnish Shine

Hi All, At a recent boat show, my dad, who is building two New Zealand design Sunbursts (we built two thirty years ago, and they are still in service) came across a wooden boat with an amazing varnish finish. He enquired as to the type of varnish and technique and was told it was traditional yacht varnish with a teaspoon of "Ottowa Oil" added. Has anybody heard of this oil or the technique of adding something similar to varnish to achieve a great shine? cheers, Mick

Never heard of it but I'll be doing a search now.

fwiw,

We use Penetrol as an additive for spar varnish, and it certainly helps me get a good fllow-out, especially in hot wx. Yep, I know that the pro's advise only varnishing under a rather narrow spread of temps and humidities, but reality often trumps advice!

But, I've never h eard of Ottawa Oil!

Cheers,
