Source for 316 stainless canvas snaps?

I have not been able to find anyone who sells 316 stainless steel snaps. Most suppliers either seem to offer just plated snaps or 18-8.

Where can I find 316 SS snaps?

18-8 is a designation for 300 series in general.

18-8 is I believe very similar to 304, 316 is slightly different I think.
http://www.marshfasteners.com/differ...vs-304-vs-316/

Urban legend if you will is 316 is far superior and is therefore often priced at a premium, where in truth there isn’t as much difference as people believe.
Kato Marine davits are a premium product and priced as such, however I believe they use 304 tubing, just well passivsted and highly polished.
Awfully sure my Radar pole and davits are 304 anyway.

Yeah, I got that wrong. Although 18-8 may fit 304, 303, 302, 301 , 316 is higher in nickel. like 18-10/14 etc. sorry for the thread drift.

Right from a quick Google search

"What's the difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel? The simple answer is 304 contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel while 316 contains 16% chromium, 10% nickel and 2% molybdenum. The molybdenum is added to help resist corrosion to chlorides (like sea water and de-icing salts)."

316 Stainless is better in a salty environment, like a boat.

However the corrosion resistance and strength of 304 and 316 are very close.
I had always believed 304 was stronger, but 316 much less susceptible to corrosion. I had an aircraft structural Engineer at work pull out one of his trusty metals manuals and show me there is very little difference between the two, which surprised me. 300 series SS are all close
The wear plate I put on my bow for the anchor chain to ride on is 301 half hard, no rust so far. I could have put a piece of grade 5 Ti, by the Ti was dark grey and sort of ugly.

I think how well the SS has been passivated is more important, many SS parts are contaminated with iron from the tooling that manufactured it.
I have taken to soaking my SS hardware with a heated solution of acetic acid, and have had much better results than I expected

Are you talking hot vinegar? Have you found it better than citric acid?

Nope, citric acid sorry.

Actually, there is plenty of hard science to prove that 316 is indeed quite superior to 304 when exposed to chlorides such as SEA WATER. (Aerospace engineers don't subscribe to urban legends. Just the data, ma'am)

I think this simple scientific (and demonstrable) fact gets mistakenly called an "urban legend" after people PAY for 316 yet unknowingly RECEIVE the cheaper 304. There is no easy way to tell for sure unless you (literally) conduct the acid test, though some will say they can see a spark color difference when grinding. Koslow sells a portable acid test for $400.

If you don't think the difference is a big deal, then you have been scammed IMO.

What are you using for the citric acid. Will grocery store acid work or is there something else that should be used?

Re: Source for 316 stainless canvas snaps?

316 is less susceptible to crevice corrosion than 304. That is the key difference. Chain plates and other structural stainless on a boat should be 316. The strength difference is insignificant.

It comes in a powder form and I get 1lb packages from a wine making shop. I've been using 1/2lb per liter of water. That might be more than needed.

It is less susceptible, just not by a whole lot. Not as much as many have been led to believe. It’s still SS, and 300 series at that.
304 is stronger, but not by much, 316 is less susceptible to corrosion, just not by all that much.
You want something less susceptible to crevice corrosion and quite a lot stronger, go with either Titanium or good ole fashioned bronze, not as strong as Ti, but nothing wrong with it.
I went with Ti, the price difference isn’t nearly what you may think.
