Primer Coat

Just finished rolling out a primer coat this morning. Although I have uniform coverage I can still see areas that we faired/filled thru the primer coat

Do I need to topcoat this so all faired/filled areas do not show thru the primer or can I go straight to the finish coat?

In my experience you need to prime, sand, prime, sand till you sand and the surface looks and feels as smooth as you want your top coat to look. I alway guide coat for every grit change that I do. That way you will know when you have remove all sand scratches. Those glass finishes don't come from luck, it can take hours upon hours of prep before you even consider touching your top coat

A coat? Most primer systems require multiple coats. I generally apply a minimum of three. These coats must be chemical bonded, if you sand between each coat it takes forever and you have to apply many more coats for the desired result. Study the entire process for painting more, or you are likely to waste a lot of time and material. Which primer are you using?

I'm using Pettit EZ prime. I didn't have enough material to top coat within the recommended time so I sanded out the first coat today, it's smooth as silk. Going to order another gallon tomorrow in case I need 3 primer coats. Hopefully it'll show up Tuesday & I can put another coat down Wednesday or Thursday cause the weather is looking good this week.

Finish sanding out tomorrow. Plan to get one top coat down during the week, hopefully the second over next weekend, third the following week....
