Yep good ol' copper is a natural growth deterrent. I now put a small copper pipe sleeve in each of my strainers. Since doing that the growth is much slower in them.

In fact, your presumption is incorrect. Washington was planning on banning copper, but then they determined that t he evidence that copper from boats was a problem in their harbors was thin AND that the alternatives to copper may well be worse.



Copper is about 150 times more prevalent in the earth's crust and in seawater than mercury. Not good for coral etc., but more like zinc and aluminum, a normal part of the environment.



So Washington is moving towards a leaching rate based limit the US EPA has been supporting (same as the California limit), which most multi-season copper based paints should be able to meet. If Washington, California, and EPA can get on the same page, that will bring some welcome sanity to the whole business.


Then we can also go and scapegoat something else.... All joking aside, it's complicated when you have billions of people living in a technological society.
