I have to do something about this sliding
companionway hatch. As you can see in the first
photo, the bottom is pristine after 23+ years. It was coated with about 10 coats of AwlBrite clear urenthane.
The other 2 photos show to outside, the part which is not shaded by the spray
dodger is cracked and lifting. The cracking started about 5-7 years ago, and I've been postponing refinishing it for years.
Now I'm wondering if it is feasible to just patch the cracked part - can I just peel up the cracked part until I have solid urethane and then feather it with fine sandpaper (and then after
cleaning the treating the
weather teak with oxalic acid, etc., etc) and then re-coat it with 10 new coats of AwlBrite?
Obviously taking this huge
hatch down to bare
wood to start over is a massive job.
I do not require that the result be museum quality or picture perfect - we don't mind if there is a noticeable line between the old and new coating, and I know the new coating will always be shinier, brighter looking that the old coating, all I need is for it to seal the
wood and prevent
rot for a good long time.
Is this possible?
THANKS!
