Pacific Island Teak Deck Replacement

So I am looking to replace my teak deck sometime in the next year.

I have read a lot of comments about places like Thailand and so on that have some great craftsman at great rates compared to Australia and some really dreadful ones.


Does anyone have any recommendations on tradesman to talk to - essentially we are planning to sail therer, leave the boat for 6 months and sail back.


Any thoughts? Is it viable?

Get rid of the teak! The boat will be lighter, there wiil be less maintenance, in the tropics, teak decks are HOT to walk on. Cover the deck with fibreglass cloth and epoxy and then either paint with non-skid paint or use a mat material like Treadmaster.

I'm going to assume it is not what you want to hear.

However, Thailand is not cheap any more, 20 yrs. ago, yes, not so now.

The new teak is nowhere as good as the old teak was.

What you need to do is get rid of the worn out teak, and get all the holes plugged, like nuku said.

Unfortunately both are right. Your still going to spend 20-60k or more for a teak decks these days. My 42 footer would be in that range(I was quoted 98k for new decks).

If it were me, I'd regroove the deck and recaulk if you have enough thickness, otherwise remove it.

I plan to salvage mine for another 5-10 years as I feel these trees need to be used as long as possible, however once the decks are done, I'll be filling holes, laying a layer of 1708 with polyester then painting and kiwi gripping for non skid
