Out on a Wet, Broken Limb

Hi, Quantum mind.
I need a source for a replacement
part for a cabin top hatch. The boat is from the 70's and even the good people at Atkins & Hoyle, who make Bomar hatches can't help me replace this part.

The part is the black mushroom-shaped cap on the exterior of the lid. It has a threaded hole on the interior that the locking dog screws into. I've tried repairing it, but there's a lot of pressure on it as the hatch locks and it just fails.

I'd not be adverse to buying a whole new pair of the complete mechanisms, both left and right, but don't know what will actually work. I believe it's referred to as a high profile hatch, but am not really sure.

I've been looking at websites for a few days now, with no success.

Hi PC, what material is the mushroom made from? Does it only bear on the hatch on the flat surface under the rounded head?

Try to find a boat-wrecker; they often have salvaged hatches and related hardware.

It would be fairly easy to make that part if you know someone with a lathe and a bottom tap. Delrin, nylon, or aluminum are all pretty easy to machine.

You might be able to make due temporarily with a barrel nut aka sex bolt aka binding barrel and butyl tape. They come in plastic, aluminum, and stainless.

Here is a 1/4 inch plastic one. Of course you have to buy 100 to get one.

BTW, Do not search for nylon sex nuts, that is a different thing altogether!

Hi, Spot,

Thanks for chiming in. The mushroom cap shaped that's broken is a plastic material, and has a rubber O-ring on it's flat surface. It only breaks when l glue, epoxy, etc. it. There's a lot of pressure applied on it when dogging the hatch.
