'Oh Joy' Restoration - 10/14/09

More fun lately. We're getting down to the bones and finding less issues than anticipated.

You can see how dry this old wood is.





Broken deck frame



The cockpit hangs on three rods per side, interesting...



Getting into the bridgedeck where the decking was soft. No rot underneath.

Bow sans bowsprit, sure looks strange...



The Rockwell Sonicrafter has been and will continue to be invaluable. BTW, the blades are fairly cheap at $44 per 3-pack.

Excellent pictures...You're right...its amazingly dry and rot free.

Boy I forgot how much fun wooden boats are. Bones look good. I have a 59 k-35 rudder at my drive way entrance. If you need the closing chocks, bronze opening ports, cowls,flush bronze bilge pump, cleats let me know. One burned on the bay years ago and I was allowed to get the boat ready for the dump.I have many parts just sitting under my shed and I could not think of a better home.

Sweet!! I'll take anything ya have. She's missing some bronze and it never hurts to have spares. Can ya snap some pictures?

She is a beauty. My fiberglass hulled Cascade has much the same deck work. I'm redoing much of it too. I do have some rot in the carlins but don't know how extensive until I get up to that area. I'm on my second cockpit rebuild. The first was done in early 90s and I was sold ply that turned out not to be marine grade. It got freshwater wet and rotted. I do recommend marine grade.
Your boat was a beauty and with your care and effort will be again.

Thanks John, it'll be Marine grade for sure. This old Weldwood deck lasted 50 years. I'm thinking the new one should last as long if not longer. I got the foredeck up Thursday and though the ply was soft everything, underneath was fine. There was a block of some sort in the stem post that was toast but the stem was fine.

Yep John..She will be Eye candy for sure...Right now she looks a little slutty as in boat porn......but when she is dressed up for the dance were going to have a proud daddy on our hands and rightly so.

To give you'all some background there is a select bunch of wooden boat snobs in this neck of the woods and probably mainly due to the fact the OH Joy has been skinned in glass will not give Charlie the time of day and think this a total waste of time ...I for one hope he smacks that smirk right off there faces by taking best of show at the WBF some day..and I would pay admission to see it.....OK..Ok.. I 'm still rough around the edged ..Gods still workin on me...Its a full time job..

You have to be careful as there's a lot of crappy marine grade plywood currently on the market. You can't go by just the name, you have to actually examine what you are buying. It seems that they'll stamp 'marine grade' on just about anything to move it these days. I looked at a stack of 5/8 marine ply several weeks ago and passed on it because it looked no different than regular CDX ply sold at Home Depot. The voids in the 'marine' ply were massive and frequent.....no thanks. I mentioned it to the yard guy at the supplier and he just shrugged. Oh well...no way I'm paying $70 a sheet for that garbage.

Oh, and very pretty boat by the way. Glad to see somebody's restoring her.

Thanks. I'll probably get mine from either Eden Saw or Hardwoods To Get, a couple of local specialty suppliers. More expensive but very good stuff. I'll be getting the slabs of African Mahogany for the cockpit coamings from the same places. 24"X1 1/4"X18' for about $300 a slab of gorgeous Sapele.
