Re: NL oil pressure

Did it run well with good oil pressure before you did the valve lash adjustment? Are there any breather hoses that hook up to the valve cover and are they correct?

I don't know about the actual pressure before I did the valve adjustment, the genny isnt set up with gauges, only automaic cut off relays (Im going to change this now and install gauges). But it was running fine.

There are no breather hoses on the valve cover.

Re: NL oil pressure

Does it have glow plugs you can remove and do a compression check? If it didn't have an oil pressure gauge you dont know if it happened suddenly, came with low oil pressure, or it happened gradually over time.

Does the engine start easily and on the first or second revolution?

Yes, it has removable glow plugs. Ill look into compression testing.

Fair point about not knowing what was going on previously with the oil pressure. I assumed, that if it has pressure it works, and vice versa.

Re: NL oil pressure

If it starts easy then you can assume the compression is good and valves are adjusted at least close to good. That also indicates no excessive wear from a lot of hours. That would lead to oil pump failure but that is really rare, but could be.

Re: NL oil pressure

A loose big end bearing cap will cause low oil pressure. You would have to remove the oil pan to check that.

Re: NL oil pressure

Is the oil pressure sensor in the right place? It's not screwed into the water jacket is it?

Not sure about revolutions, but it starts within probably 3 seconds of hitting the starter.

Take it out and crank the engine and see if oil or antifreeze comes out.

You can see oil in the tube so definitely not antifreeze.

Re: NL oil pressure

If it was in perfect condition (new) it should start by just bumping the starter. 3 seconds is quite a while but not unusual for an old worn engine. Do the compression check.
