Once again a tapered wrap on the leading edge.

WOW! That's gonna be one heck of a strong boat with all that carbon sandwiched into the laminate!

Re: Nauticat 52 Refit

Top, bottom, and trailing edges are all wrapped at this stage. WR wraps around a small radius nice, especially if you butter it up with some colloidal first.

Re: Nauticat 52 Refit

First layer finished, next layer begins. This is a Carbon 17.5 oz double bias. Talk about heavy duty! Alternating layers of WR and DB gives a laminate with fibers going in all directions. The DB is too heavy to wrap the tight radii around the top, bottom, and trailing edge. It is cut flush. We removed about 3/8 of solid chop matt and replaced it with this.

Re: Nauticat 52 Refit

Next layers on. This is a regular 24 oz WR, E glass, wrapped around all radii. It is then topped with a single layer of super duper Triax. This is a heavy Biax with a very heavy uni stitched to its face. Weight unknown but it's got to be over 30 oz. No wrap on it obviously. This pic is just the WR, before Triax.

Triax close up. This stuff is bombproof, I call this skeg and rudder setup a "whale slayer". Check how heavy that external uni weave is.

Re: Nauticat 52 Refit

Whew, I'm done. Takes forever to post like this. I have zillions of pics backed up at this point, gotta try to portray one project at a time and catch up. Nice lay ups for a hand lam, eh?

Sure Bob, we're still on track. Acres of work left to do, but it's really coming together now. Aside from decks we did a new bottom, refinished the topsides, new rigging standing and running, many new systems, new sails, a new tank, all new plumbing, etc. etc. It is a pretty epic project. Not really having a schedule or timeline other than "finish this damn project before summer" helps! I really need more helpers and another babysitter/nanny though....

That's the idea! It's a massive vessel, it needs that kind of lam IMHO. The rudder rings like a 1" steel plate if you hit it with a hammer now. It's pretty impressive, I may have gotten a little carried away. She's my baby after all...

I bet it will be as strong if not stronger than the toughest steel or aluminum "expedition" boats. Planning for some high latitude cruising?!

Just trying to be prepared for all eventualities like a good little Boy Scout.

Don't get these guys started on FRP vs. Aluminum again, or they'll send Panope over to "test" my rudder with his splitting maul!

Nah, I wouldn't wanna re-activate any controversy. Soooo, will you be re-fittin' your baby with a new anchor and, if so, which one do you think the best & why?!

One that is designed to be used as a weapon to fend off pirates, of course!
