So.. here's the pic's of the plates.. one stainless and the other with the steel plate.. presume the cap nuts are on the stainless plate.
Just had a thought that made me chuckle to myself.. here I am fretting about the keel when, if this was a delivery, I'd arrive at the boat and sail within the next couple of days with barely a thought..
Funny how being one's own dime affects the mind..
And I guess.. how much faith one puts in the owners being truthful about their boats..

Re: Keel Bolts question..

Boatie, the original installation on most British boats was mild steel treated. The good thing about that is that you can't get crevice corrosion and as long as the keel to hull seal is good you'll have no problems. Many people do in fact use stainless washers/backing plates when they pull a stud for inspection or replacement because it does cut down on the rust. Its just not a big deal. For future reference if you want to pull a stud a really heavy duty electric impact tool with the proper sized socket will get the job done nice and easy. Often the backing plate will rust to the nut and you'll need to use a zip cutter to remove material between the backing plate and nut before you can remove it.
By the way, things look damn tidy on those keel bolts, have a safe and fun trip.

A very good article for us all to read. Encapsulated ballast or not.

Re: Keel Bolts question..

Thanks for that, Scaramanga.

Informative article, and really practical, not alarmist.

pirate Re: Keel Bolts question..

So.. instead of blowing depsits on jobs to do I have decided to wait till the end of July to maybe get a boat.
If the Sadler is still around great.. but I doubt it considering her condition and nice interior.. better than the others for sale and costing 2K to 3K more..
All it needs is me to fall off my bike and a lot flows outa the account.. so when I've the cash I'll make the dash..
Once bitten on the spend before earned.. Twice shy.
Thanks to all for the tips and advice..

Re: Keel Bolts question..

Would be great to get some thoughts on my keel bolts. Just need a clean or bigger issues are lurking.
