Kanzaki Gearbox

My gearbox is slipping in forward gear. I have a kanzaki KB W 10 on a Yanmar 3HM35F.

I am hearing that Yanmar no longer makes some of the parts for this unit.

I'm not able to find a new one or any rebuilt unit for sale.

East Coast Marine in New Jersey says he may be able to rebuild mine but if not - there is no solution

Seems hard to believe.

Boat is 1992 Pacific Seacraft - 1800 engine hours ...

I'm on southbound cruise to Florida but stuck in Chesapeake Bay til I can get transmission repaired .

Any help/suggestions?

Thanks

Give Oldport Marine in Newport a call. They always had a big pile of used Yanmar parts around...

I just wrote to ALFRED At Schooner Bay, he says he has plenty of KBW transmissions and many parts. He just closes for winter vacation in Feb and maybe Mar. Here is his reply.....

I'm having issues with KB W 10. Have been told ZF12M is an alternative but may require some modifications.

Re: Kanzaki Gearbox

No experience with the KBW 10 but I had the same issue (slipping) on my KM2a on my Yanmar 2gmF13.

I also ran into the "no parts" available issue so buying new cone clutches was not an option.

In my case the yanmar manual says the WRONG oil to use in the transmission so the PO's were using the wrong stuff for many years (possibly since assembly). The yanmar manual states to use 30w NON-detergent oil.

If you climb inside and actually reach around the transmission and take a picture of the serial plate on it (I did) you can find out what Kanzaki itself says is the right oil. In my case it was 30w HIGH detergent oil.

What's the difference?

Non-detergent oil has nothing in it to reduce varnish build up and sludge.
High-detergent oil has thinners\additives to prevent and remove varnish.

Why do cone clutches slip?
1) From abuse (hard shifting with RPM up, improperly adjusted shifter resulting in partial engagement, etc).

2) From varnish build up on the cone face allowing slippage.

I changed out with HIGH detergent 30w every 10hrs or so of motoring this summer and by the end of the season my slippage disappeared entirely. It didn't cost me much more than 25$ worth of oil and some alone time in the lazarette with a small handpump lol.
