How good are these?

Last month I was working on the show/toilet and had to install plumbing fittings as well as through hulls. I had to "manufacture" spanners out of aluminum as nothing in my tool-box would go anywhere near the dimension required. Then I came across these a couple of days ago for $A6.44. on eBay

I just wonder how good they are but I suppose I haven't much to lose!

They are going to be too long to allow you to turn the fitting in any likely plumbing setting, such as under the sink or in the bilge between stringers. One of these:https://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-Ba...MaAh1YEALw_wcB will probably work better in the spaces where plumbing has to run.

I used a basin wrench under the head sink last week. It’s great. And the head flops over so you can get at weird angles too.

How long do you think they are!!

Any shorter and they'd be useless. Surely you wouldn't want it any shorter than 8 inch?

The maximum nut size the Basin Wrench can handle is 1 1/4 inch. That is not enough to handle most "through hull" fittings or plumbing connections.

As they are specifically designed for plumbing/bathroom work they will be fine just avoid using them in a situation where you may be tempted to slip a 2ft cheater bar over the handle, believe me the jaws won't take that sort of force.....

My old boat had a traditional stuffing box. I bought two of these from hd to keep next to it for adjustment purposes. Each one was pre adjusted for specific nut and color coded. Cheap and effective.

I've got the Kinchrome equivalent of that stubby shifter. IMO essential kit in the boat's toolbox. Not only do they have a stubby handle, they are also wide mouth making them ideal for working in typical confined locations on more than just plumbing. I do think the Kinchrome is stainless of some sort and it has a plasticy/rubbery coating in the handle to help prevent scratching adjacent stuff.

Well my "stubby shifter" spanner arrived today. It is exactly as all the photos show. It is lightweight so it must be an aluminum diecast (except for the worm) and it won't rust. It seems quite strong enough for plumbing fittings but I'll take IslandHopper's advice and not be tempted to put a "cheater bar" over the end for extra leverage

I couldn't understand why some of these spanners sold for around $20 but they are described as "Chrome Vanadium" whereas mine only cost $6+ and it appears to be diecast of some sort. Still I reckon it will do the job.
