Helm Pump Rattle

My Lecomble &Schmitt helm pump makes a rattling noise as I reverse direction of the wheel and leaves quite a bit of loose play in the wheel before the new direction engages and the wheel starts moving the rudder. It sounds like a valve fluttering. I think I have all the air out of the system (just a simple double acting double rod end cylinder with the two copper tubes and hose pig tails). My Simrad autopilot then indicates "rudder too slow" despite the system being 4 1/2 turns HO to HO. It is a fairly small cylinder and a large rudder. Any thoughts on the cause and the correction? Thanks.
