Hardware store varnish?

I've used schooner gold, captains, epiphanes and a jar of stuff left at our club and am having a hard time determining if the expensive varnish is worth it. I have to knock down and reapply every three months anyway, so im wondering if i should buy cheap varnish or get free stuff from our cities recycling center instead of $40 a quart

Exterior teak hatches and handrails, all under covers when not in use...
