Fiberglass got wet. Still good?

I had some fiberglass stored on a shelf and didn't tighten my hatch. Rain got in and the glass was wet.

I can't think of any reason it wouldn't be good anymore. But just checking. Could rain water damage fiberglass cloth or tape?

As far as I know, the ordinary stuff is just very thin spun fibers of actual glass.

As long as it's clean and completely dry when you use it, I don't see how it can have been degraded.

Re: Fiberglass got wet. Still good?

you will need to make sure it is 100% dry as any moisture will stop your resin curing.

i run a dehumidifier in my storeroom for this reason, you will be surprised how much moisture a roll of glass will absorb over a cold winter!

if you can, lay it out in the sun, dries it pretty quickly, then store in a cardboard box, afterwards ,if your cardboard is soggy........so is your cloth!

otherwise no ill effects from getting wet

You need to know it is 1000% , yes one thousand!, dry before using. Frankly, I would just not use it at all. But maybe a week in a hot sun I could be convinced....

Depending how wet, you might consider a good hair dryer if it doesn't involve a huge roll of fiberglass.

Aren't the glass fibers held in place with soluble starch?

It might get tangled if not handled carefully before drying.

Re: Fiberglass got wet. Still good?

I reached out to a cloth manufacturer (BGF/Porcher) with this question and got a reply that the initial exposure to water does not wreck the sizing and the cloth should be usable if dried thoroughly. I did not ask if 6-7 years if enough...Gave them kudos for answering a question from a small time end user.
