F&C 44' Ketch: odd finding under the battery box...

Odd colored "epoxy" I found under one of the battery boxes... I am thinking it is battery acid that has possibly discolored the epoxy or polyester resin?

Hammered it-- yep, tough as nails, just like epoxy...

Thoughts? I am boggled...

Could be a 5 minute type epoxy that is black.

Would try to clean all the crud out of the area and grind it down to something close to smooth to make a better assessment to find the reason for the repair.

Before you take an angle grinder to this stuff...

How old is the boat?

I had a mid-70s boat that had a lot of very hard black mastic that was used to fill and fair at the factory. Great stuff... except the binding fibers were not glass but asbestos... Seriously bad news for your lungs if you are grinding it...

Late 70's, built in Buenos Aires, Argentina... Asbestos? I, ya yai... Hhhmm... I actually wasn't going to grind it-- I have an air chisel which is far superior to an angle grinder with 24grit... This thing slices through FRG like 'buda'... Good call out on the possibility of it being asbestos... That would not be a pleasant thing-- ****, now I am concerned....

Hi, I think I would use a decommissioned wood chisel and a mallet, far easier to control exactly just how much force is applied and where, although admittedly somewhat slower.

Also a very good idea as long as it behaves like epoxy... Thank you-- I do have two sets of chisels-- wood baring and decommissioned set that I use for misc necessities... Like today-- I needed to use one to break a bond between my motor and shaft coupling-- after 25years... They THOUGHT they were inseparable... With some 'Blue Creeper' redneck penetrating oil and alot of brass hammer banging... A simple decommed wood chisel-- did the trick.

God is good....
