Dickinson diesel heater, metering stem o-ring

Hey folks!

I have a nice vintage Dickinson diesel heater on my boat and it seems to be working fine for the last three winters I’ve owned the boat. It burns a bit too hot and I can’t adjust it lower than the 3rd setting (out of 5) so I decided to take it apart again this year, clean and adjust as best as I could. As I was taking it apart I broke the o-ring on the metering stem (kind of intentionally as I was suspecting it of leaking). It is the only o-ring in the entire system so anyone who has been through it would know what I am referring to but please see attached diagram from the user manual just in case. I am quite far from the US and Canada so it’ll be a while if I can get a replacement part for it so I figured I can go to a seal store and see if I can get a replacement. But, before I do I wanted to check with you fine folks who have done the same dance what the dimensions are for this o-ring. The only information I could find online says that it is a Viton o-ring (research tells me thats more heat resistant than nitrile) and that it has a part number 02-130. Any help is greatly appreciated, especially before the real winter hits! Stay warm everyone!

Re: Dickinson diesel heater, metering stem o-ring

That sounds like a standard Parker o-ring size. Their size chart shows

2-130 1 5/8 OD 1 13/16 ID 3/32 Stock diam

Does that sound likely? If so, any seal shop should be able to supply them.

Jim

Edit: I have now actually looked at your drawing and see that the above isn't even close! But perusal of the Parker info online may help you identify the size. Best bet is to take the part into a seal shop and ask them. Should be easy for them to ID.

Thank you for chiming in!

I am afraid not, the o-ring is tiny, it is not with me at the moment but approximately 6mm OD and 4mm ID, something like that.

Measure the shaft that it fits on, O rings have recomended shaft and bore sizes Parkers catalog is good for finding a size.
measure the oring cross section as well.

I've a couple of those Dickinson metering valves, but have never had to replace the O-ring, so I don't know if they are SAE or Metric dimensioned.
But for the price shown at one of the links, (over $6,) I'd be taking the whole metering valve to a seal store and probably get a dozen for that price and no shipping.
Dickinson? I wouldn't be surprised that if you ordered from them the shipping would be 3 times the cost of the O-ring.

Re: Dickinson diesel heater, metering stem o-ring

Thanks everyone for your input. I got a replacement by going to a local seal/o-ring vendor. The size that fit in the Dickinson 3D valve was 3/16 ID and 1/16 thickness viton o-ring (in metric he said 4mm x 1.78). I lost sleep over nothing, nice and toasty again on the boat. Cheers!
