Brazilian Cherry Hardwood Flooring

Brazilian Cherry Hardwood Flooring in boat for a floor. I have a lot of 3/4 tong and grove hardwood left over from a flooring job. The pieces where to small to look good in the house, but they might work in my boat. I was thinking of gluing them down in the galley area. Has any one used this stuff in boats? How do you think it will hold up?

Yes I have used it in three yachts so far and the stuff is awesome. I screw it down though and use wood plugs. It is extremely stable and never had any warpage or expansion issues with it. I have used teak oil or varnish for a gloss look

Just curious why not install the normal way except maybe with stainless steel nails or monel(sp) staples

I would imagine that there is entirely too much flexing/expanding/contracting of the boat.

That's why you don't see nails/staples in anything structural or even in most trim on a boat. Even in a house you need at least 3/4 osb/ply or so for subfloor in a house to be nailing to.

I want to glue because it is not that big of an area. 3' x 4' maybe. I'm not sure what is under the floor and don't want to put holes in the hull. It's already per-finished from the factory.

Yea if it is that small area, then you could set it in with 3M4200, just incase you need to remove it, also put a gap around the outside edges.

Keep in mind that Brazilian Cherry is much heavier than teak so if weight is an issue and you are covering a larger area you will be adding some poundage, other than that it holds up well in damp areas, very stable. I installed it in my screened porch 15 years ago, still looks new with Sikkens Cetol as a finish. My porch gets a lot of rain blowing in off the water but the Brazilian Cherry shrugs it off.

Hi All,

I'm looking for a good flooring material that will withstand the rigors of a boat, but I have a catamaran, so I'm looking for as light a material as I can get. Oak in there now, installed by a prevoius owner, and it's holding up well, but I think it's adding a lot of unecessary weight to the boat. Anyone out there with experience using bamboo or cork in boat?

Cork is a great non-skid but will get dirty over time unless you seal it but that would negate the non-skid properties. Bamboo laminates would be a good choice but what is your substrate?

My sub floor is 3/4 ply, so I've got a good base. The cork I'm talking about is a flooring material, but I don't know if it is the same material as regular cork. I want to make sure whatever I use can withstand a little abuse, equipment laid on it, water, etc...

My boat still has a few leaks I haven't found yet!

You can get it both ways..............even custom milled to a thinner T&G thickness to save a little weight.

Teak decking systems markets epoxy based glues with rubber or something flexible which is good for flooring apps in a boat. Other manufacturers have similar products too.

I am only referring to SOLID Brazilian Cherry, any kind of engineered laminate will peal up like a banana after it gets wet
