Alden 44 Hull Construction

I know that Alden 44's are balsa cored, but does anyone know if they are cored below the waterline?

I've read plenty of specifications but they don't give detailed information on what you want. Maybe you'll have to PM an owner?

Re: Alden 44 Hull Construction

According to Sailing Magazine:”The boat’s fiberglass hull is vacuum bagged with a balsa core. The decks are similarly constructed as a sandwich of fiberglass and lightweight woods.”

Don’t know definitively about the 44 but our Alden is solid below the WL. Don’t think that varies between the models.

Thanks for the info. I emailed the builder and asked if they still have archived information regarding the 44. They reached out to one of the retired workers from that era and he confirmed the entire hull to s vacuum bagged balsa cored.

Re: Alden 44 Hull Construction

Centerboard Question
Hello all! I’m currently looking at an Alden 44 as a live aboard for our family for the next couple of years. I really love these boats, but the one we’re looking at has had the center board removed, presumably “permanently”, including (obviously) filling the hole in the hull/keel for the lifting mechanism, etc. My question is:
How well do they sail without the center board? Is not having it prohibitive, or does it simply make pointing less efficient?
we’re ok with a slightly decrease in performance, but don’t want to end up with a boat that doesn’t point at all and can’t hold a line.
Thanks so much for any thoughts!!!
