Flip it one way and it turns on the tach illumination, flip it the other and it self tests all the warning light bulbs. It's a momentary switch in this position and springs back when released. Handy for the temp bulb test since that bulb doesn't illuminate during normal starting procedures.

This tests the bulbs and sockets, and even the integrity of some connections and wires. But it says nothing about the sender/switches or the connection at them.

If this makes sense, I think it shows that the factory setup does test the temp bulb. At least if the operator chooses to do so with the toggle.
Sounds as if finding a replacement switch would be fun.

Yes some Yanmar B type panels have this arrangement and other Yanmar B type panels don't -

Same panel terminology but (presumably) different part numbers. Some had two switches - a SPST switch for Tach illumination and another SPST switch to silence the buzzer alarm.

Questions: four winds - the toggle to test idiot lights on your 3GM30F was located where? (or are you speaking of the "glow"/start rocker?)
Wotname - how would you modify the alarm circuitry to allow for 'testing' of the idiot light/alarm for water temp?
Thanks in advance....(and keep up the good work)...
Opps, I missed this post; somehow it got past me - sorry!

There are few options from simple to less simple.

The easiest way is to simply take a wire from the over temp light (from the side that goes to the switch on the engine) and run it to a push button switch (momentarily ON) and then to 12V negative (i.e. engine frame or negative bus or wherever you can get 12V negative). Push the switch and the lamp should illuminate and the alarm buzzer sound. This only tests the lamp. Rather than taking this test switch wire from the lamp itself, you could take it to the terminal on the switch mounted on the engine. This will now test the wiring and connectors and the lamp but of course not the temperature switch itself. To test the temperature switch, you have to remove it and place it in hot water etc.

If you want something a little fancier, you can wire up a relay that operates when the start key is operated. Then use the relay contacts to provide the same 12V negative to the lamp in the same way as the push button switch. In this instance, every time the engine is started, the temperature light will illuminate and buzzer will sound while the starter is engaged.

I hope this makes sense but if not, please ask for a better explanation or a drawing.
