Re: What is this metal thing in the bottom of my engine oil pan?

Looks to me as a broken half of drive dog used to power circ pump (jasbow? rubber impeller that uses a pin to engage ) Hard to imagine how it got into the sump, perhaps on a motor stripdown & the piece sat on an internal ledge until rough seas dislodge it.

Re: What is this metal thing in the bottom of my engine oil pan?

Best to just replace oil pan with new gasket, new oil and run engine as is, Yes, would be nice to know however.........maybe if the engine still runs smooth just take it easy and save money for future engine expenses. Hell that engine might go another 10,000 hours for all you know

It is a dimple. Not sure what that would suggest... The chunk came off a 1/2" solid round steel stock with a dimple on the end.

Also the cam shaft end connecting to the water pump seems fiND.

Also, I thought it may be a magnet, some people put magnets in oil pans

FWIW I think the engine was worked on, perhaps rebuilt. There are the usual tell tale signs of slipped tools.

Re: What is this metal thing in the bottom of my engine oil pan?

Somewhere there is a 3/4" shaft that used to have a slot in it to drive a tang on something, like an oil pump or water pump or maybe something in the injector pump, that now has half a slot.

Thanks for the kind words Jim. We are very familiar with Kubota diesels and Beta Marine engines in particular. I'm happy to share my knowledge. Joe

Here is a link to a drawing of the drive dog (page 37) off the Jabsco pump . The end of which shows the snapped off broken half moon shape found in your sump.

Watch the video in my post # 18. I think that may be where it came from.

Re: What is this metal thing in the bottom of my engine oil pan?

It’s possible that the cam was repaired ( since it has the updated sleeve) and the broken part was never removed from the pan.

Also found a 1/4" hole drilled into the transmission covered with a dab of sealant. Not sure about that either...

I'm going to say that piece of metal, maybe part of a shaft, like a oil pump shaft, injection pump shaft, raw water impeller shaft?
Just one half of the shaft keyway/dog?
Humm....
1/4" hole, big enough to slip a optic of some sort to inspect damper springs, or as said, lubricate a rusty shaft, though it looks to be to far aft to lubricate a shaft for removal aid, shaft goes through the damper plate, hole looks to be positioned before the plate, so that wouldn't help.
Better check that engine carefully.

Re: What is this metal thing in the bottom of my engine oil pan?

The broken piece is 1/2 of the drive dog on the cam shaft that turns the raw water pump. The hole in the bellhousing filled with silicone is an inspection hole. It is normally plugged with silicone to prevent water and dirt from entering the bellhousing.
