Volvo MD7B Rotation

I have an MD7B on an 120S drive, where the hub for the original folding prop is becomming "loose", and the hubs you can buy now from Volvo are not compatible with the old blades.....

So I am going for a fixed 2 blade propeller instead for the last years of the engines life time.

But I need to find out which way the engine rotates, in order to select a RH or LH prop, and I can't seem to find any reliable information about that.

Does anyone know?

Thank you in advance

Re: Volvo MD7B Rotation

Most Older Volvos turn left hand props. Depends on if you have a Vdrive or a reversing transmission Use your existing prop to tell if it's LH or RH. Light be stamped on the prop itself along with the diameter and pitch. Usually stamped on the hub so 10 X12RH would be a 10"diameter 12"pitch right hand prop

Meant to say most older Volvos are left hand rotating engines. But then they use a Reversing gear so you typically see a RH right hand prop. If it's got a vee drive the prop will likely be LH left hand.

It is a Volvo 120S Saildrive with original hub and folding propeller.

Re: Volvo MD7B Rotation

My Guess would be LH. Look at what you have to be sure about that and the pitch and diameter.

You really should try and match the pitch and diameter if your original worked OK.

Re: Volvo MD7B Rotation

The MD7 engine rotates clockwise (right hand) when viewed from the flywheel end, and of course just the opposite when viewed from the timing case end.

However, this doesn’t really matter because the 120S saildrive can drive a LH or RH prop.

If your original folding prop was a VP prop, it is a LH prop because that’s all that VP made for years. If your original prop was made by someone other than VP it could be LH or RH.

If you install a VP two blade fixed prop it will be a LH prop as that’s all VP sells.

Re: Volvo MD7B Rotation

MD7B with 120S saildrive is left hand prop. I have the exact same set up.
I buy this propeller VP 16 LH 11 from general propeller. It is a volvo penta aluminum prop with epoxy coating, it works but I wish I could find one in bronze.
