Used motor oil discard

After our try to recycle 2 gal of oil at NAPA Freeport (fail), we just tried NAPA Georgetown. Vacant stares at counter. Finally, a customer in line says he spreads it around his house foundation to control termites. [emoji30]
A lot of this countries power is generated by diesel. Is there a good reason some mix of oil into fuel is not feasible?

Dumping oil on the ground around your house is illegal in most states.

Re: Used motor oil discard

Many people do as they please with the oil so that is nothing new, but it has been found to be a pollutant.

In the 70's, when we changed the oil in our tractors the old oil went directly onto the ground.

We don't do that though these days.

On top of that the tractors have a lot more oil in their engines.

when I was a kid, we saved it up in a 55 gal drum and in the summer, sprayed in on the driveway to keep dust down.

When I asked in the Bahamas, they told me they put it around the houses to keep snakes away. I think it was Foxes on Long Island that they would take it for a nominal charge.

Re: Used motor oil discard

We found that other places do not handle things the way we do where we live (in Maryland, USA)

We have exceptionally good recycling available to us. But you have to take it to the landfill, there is no pickup. At our last house just 50 miles away we had curbside pickup. But in Canada and a large number of marinas we go to the US, it is completely unavailable.

We pay $5 a pump out in much of the US. But much of Long Island Sound is completely free. And in Canada, it is $20 or more.

I can usually find a place to dispose of oil a short drive from my house. AutoZone or the landfill. In Canada, most municipal wharfs had a big used oil collection center right there.

To a large degree, it depends upon the local areas appreciation for and commitment to the environment. And some of that has to do with the financial means to address it.

So this was just a wandering pointless post about the variability of responsible disposal.

Really? Why not just pour it overboard--which is where it is all going when you do that.

Don't service stations accept it in your area?

If not, fishermen will take it and add it to their fuel.
