Swapping Volvo Penta MD 11C for Yanmar 3YM30AE

hey guys,

and so it happened I got a new boat, 35ft sailboat, designed by Visiers in 1990. I'm based in Spain.

It's got the original engine Volvo Penta MD 11C with Z-transmission, 23hp. It runs, but with troubles. And so I'm going to replace it with a new one.

I'm considering Yanmar 3YM30AE, 29hp.

Overall, it shall fit nicely in the engine room. However, I'm worried about the position of engine mounts, in relation to the engine bed as well as Z-transmission. Is it going to be an easy swap, or shall I expect lots of fiberglass work and other troubles?

You might like to consider a Beta repower rather than a Yanmar. Beta will supply an engine with the same "footprint" as your Volvo and can also supply an adapter that will allow your old saildrive to connect to the new engine painlessly.

thank you for the tip!

However, with the new yanmar I will also get a new transmission including the sail drive unit. At least thats how I'm thinking about it, to swap the whole thing.

And so that makes me think whether I might have troubles fitting the new yanmar engine, yanmar saildrive and yanmar engine mounts.

Any thoughts on this?

The new saildrive may not match the bolt pattern of the Volvo one but if the Yanmar comes with an SD 60 there should be a set of holes that match the Volvo pattern.... if it's an SD 20 I don't think it has the dual hole option. Either way, you need to make sure the existing mounting surface is perfectly flat and smooth for the diaphragm to seal well and that the threaded holes are in good condition.
Keep us posted and I can give you more info re the saildrive bed and bolt holes if you have difficulties.

- yanmar: The new Yanmar SD25 Saildrive has exactly the same outline and dimensions as the well proven and highly durable SD20 Saildrive.

any thoughts on saildrive mounts/holes compatibility with volvo MD 11C?


I cant find any technical drawing depicting the bolt pattern for SD25 ...

Yanmar is a terrific engine, but you might want to look at the stiffness of the motor mounts.My mechanic recommended we install different mounts to cut down on the vibration. Have never had a problem.
