Perkins 4.236 Oil Change / Maintenance

Hi All,
I recently purchased a Whitby 42 that has a Perkins 4.236 engine. I am planning on doing my first oil & filter change as well as any other required maintenance. I know it's a very common engine and I'd like to learn from others mistakes before I make my own! Any recommendations or sources to make my first time easier? I'd also like to hear recommendations on the best oil & filters to use too!

Thanks!

I have a 4236M 1984

A couple of things

They take a lot of oil, around 11 litres

As I am in the Tropics I use SAE40 not multigrade, I try and get Turbo diesel engine oil if I can because someone told me it is better

50 pumps on the built in oil change pump is 1 US Gallon

If you have the horizontal oil filter you can fill it with oil BEFORE you fit it, it will not leak as it has a valve in it and you avoid the “death Rattle” on Start up after the oil change

Buy an oil filter removal tool

My handbook says change the oil every 250 hours or 4 months

Other things to think about

Get hold of the parts manual, very useful if you need to work on things

The Salt water pump access is very tight when changing an impeller, think about fitting a Speadseal cover as trying to put the 6 small screws back is no fun

Removal and cleaning of the heat exchange is a VERY LONG job so I have fitted a water strainer AFTER the salt water pump before the heat exchanger so if any impeller blades drop off they end up in the strainer and they do not end up blocking the heat exchanger and causing overheating

Good luck

Re: Perkins 4.236 Oil Change / Maintenance

Take an oil sample and send it off to Blackstone for analysis.

Also, I run wix filters on my 4.236 - can't think of the filter number right now. Bigger is better.

Here are some links for suggestions.

G'day, Mate. WIX-521773 is the oil filter number. Mine uses 8.5 quarts (give or take). Good time to check the heat exchanger zinc and oil cooler (if you have one and it has a zinc). Make sure the coolant is on the mark, as well as the transmission oil. Check the belt tension on the alternator and the sea water inlet strainer as well. All the best. Cheers.
