MDI or Control Panel problem? D2-75 Volvo Penta.

Hello, I find myself in Cartagena Colombia (lovely place by the way). We pulled into our slip, the engine working perfectly. After a couple of weeks doing some work and enjoying this great city, went to fire up the engine, and could not power on...

I would love some trouble shooting help. The obvious culprit is the MDI box since so many people have had failures. But it seems from reading through some other threads that many people don't explicitly describe the symptoms of their failure. The few that do seem to find that the LCD panel turns on when they touch the ON/OFF button, but then goes blank when they push the start button. This is not the symptom I have.

Symptom:
Hit the ON/OFF button on my control panel. LCD does not light up, other buttons unresponsive.

Troubleshooting I've done:
Checked for obvious corrosion and loose connections of the multi-pin connectors at the panel and the MDI box on the engine. Checked MDI fuse. Checked if MDI has power by checking across fuse contact points inside MDI.

I'm able to start the engine just fine by jumping with a screwdriver.

Questions:
1) Is someone able to offer advice on how to distinguish whether the problem is with the button touch panel (which is exposed to the elements after all) or the MDI itself? Or something else? This is my most pressing question.

2) Can someone clear up some part number confusion? My part is 23195776. My MDI was replaced under the recall in 2020. However, when I look at the recall document (See Here) the proper replacement is listed as 23231607. I see numerous reports of people ordering 23231607, and getting a box labeled as such but finding part 23195776 inside the box. Some dealers apparently say that 23231607 is the kit number and 23195776 is the part itself. Can anyone definitively clear up this confusion? Has anyone ever seen an actual 23231607 (on the part, not the box)? I was able to find a picture online on a dealer website showing different part number inside the box (attached). If the dealer put the wrong part on my engine in 2020, I'd like the correct one provided to me at no charge.

23231607 is correct part number for the kit.

Turned out to be the MDI. Easy job to replace but pisses me off they are still going bad, and they are expensive. I already had the latest version, and it still went bad.

Bypass is very easy, but I don’t like running without shutdown protection from overheat/oil pressure. If not for that, I’d consider just rigging up a two dollar switch.
