MD7 (raw water cooled) + Water Filter?

Hi there,

I suspect this is a 'stupid question' but I've been surprised in the past. I recently took ownership of a boat with a Volvo Penta MD7 that runs mostly OK.

While I was looking around the engine the other day, I noticed that the raw water hose from the Volvo S120 saildrive goes directly into the water pump">raw water pump on the engine. There is no raw water strainer in between.

Is this common? My gut reaction was to add one.
Thanks,

That is how they were installed.
I just removed my MD7B, that had been like that since 1984, without issues.

Note, there is a "strainer" in the leg, where it takes in water.
