Do you have a low oil pressure light too? If yes (likely), does it stay on when the engine starts?

Because if the light goes off and the buzzer continues to sound when the engine runs. you probably have a faulty oil pressure sender unit. I run Yanmar, not Volvo so speak under correction: the Yanmar has seperate senders for the light and buzzer, no doubt Volvo does too.

If they both stay on when the engine runs, make an appointment with your local engine rebuilders

Re: Lost 1 liter of oil. Screwed?

On the original topic.
Engine needs a minimal quantity of oil to run with normal oil pressure i.e. 1 lt out of 2,8 lt that is the normal quantity. The rest are to assure normal oil feeding when boat is heeling or rocking on the waves.
If there was not enough oil pressure alarm would sound and soon enough engine would turn off automatically.
0.6lt is what goes in the filter. Always before checking oil quantity open the oil filling screw to let all oil drain in the oil pan to get a correct reading (even if the engine is sitting for days).
As for the Volvo alarm. I have a D1-20. Alarm sounds. Oil quantity is fine. Pressure checked with manometer. Oil pressure switch replaced. Oil overpressure valve replaced. MDI replaced. Wiring to tachometer and control panel replaced. Tachometer replaced. Control panel replaced. Alarm still sounds. Broke the buzzer. VOLVO sucks???

If you are really curious, go get an oil analysis. They are at auto parts stores here in the US, cost about 35$ take about 2 weeks and are as simple as taking a 1/8 cup of oil, during the oil change, into the container provided, shipping it off for testing, and reading the results in the email.

If you choose to do more than one, for trending purposes, you will see how well or poorly your lubrication is for the motor by the suspension of metals in the oil. Each metal comes from differing parts of the motor, for instance chromium is from rings.

These kits were designed for fleet maintenance purposes, and as such could predict future down time, or replacement of the engine in question.

But my bet is that your fine.
