Even if it works the seal is probably very worn and you will have to repeat the process soon to put in a new seal.
Not normally necessary to demount the pump, just remove the cover, pull the impeller and you can often pop the seal out there. Then of course you can feel the shaft and identify if there are bad wear lines in it. Many times it is fine so just replace the seal.

Your comment was about replacing the spring in the lip seal to extend the life of the seal. That thought is not practical for the reasons that I wrote.

If you can get to the seal without removing the pump from the engine more power to you. My experience has been that by the time the seal starts leaking the bearing is due for replacement too. To properly inspect the pump for wear removal is necessary.
