OK, I'm setting up the wetlift for alignment and I look straight down and here is the trans shifter linkage sticking straight up where the exhaust hose needs to go. So, I see it's adjustable but if you turn it downwards it hits the wetlift. So, how in the hell is one suppose to hook up the shifter cable without forcing it around the exhaust system?

Next, I need to install a vented loop between the heat exchanger and the exhaust elbow but here's this zigzag set up. You would think Yanmar would install two 90º fittings with a loop hose between. But NO, the straight one coming out of the heat exchanger is permanent.

I'll have to come up with a 90º hose to fit that and the a special 90º fitting (3/4" NPT to 1" barb end) for the elbow. All these marine engines they put out and no one is thinking about the design.

Does anyone have pictures of how their 3JH is set up for the shifter and/or exhaust loop?
I can manage to rig up some stuff that'll work but it would be nice if this stuff was already out there to just buy. I've manufactured half of this boat already, why the motor stuff too?

I have the 3JH4E and my exhaust and shifter aren't anywhere near that close.

This is after the work Chief did to reverse my shifter.

Yep! I see there is a modification, Too. I tried turning the bracket around backwards so it's closer to the center but I'll have to cut some of the lever and bracket off to clear the movement.

I'll see if there are any other ideas before chopping up brand new parts.

BTW-Isn't that little metal plate behind the cable suppose to be under both screws?

Now where is that sense of adventure?

Besides if you chop it up you can pick up a new one, unless it is back ordered. Though with your machining skills it won't take you very long to design and make something that Yanmar should have to start with.

1. I only had to take off a little of Frank's Shifter to ensure clearance.

2. Vetus makes a muffler with a rotatable neck.

3 How about a short length of the Blue Hi-temp silicone hose?

It looks like I'd only have to cut off about 3/8" for it to clear enough.

The problem with this boat is the upward slope under the motor. The wetlift will only have about 6" of hose. And yeah, I considered some flex hose to twist the wetlift sideways a bit.

My 3JH4E shifters (both engines - 2007 vintage) are mounted on the other side of the tranny - I have not looked at the detail recently but maybe you can just switch the lever and mounting if the shaft goes right thru??
Another point - be sure to sand back the lousy dusting of paint that yanmar put on the engine mounts and paint them properly. The original paint will last a very short time in the salt atmosphere (on a marine engine - who'da thought??) before the mounts turn to rust.

Thanks Paul but the shifter is a one side unite only. And yeah! I noticed the paint flaking off. I'll be painting over the whole mount system once it's established and before the final set. I still need to shim up the whole thing another 5/8" to line up the prop coupler. The motor mounts don't have enough threads and I wouldn't want them that high up anyway.

Del and diesel installers , what a difference the digital camera and some good software has done to describing installation issues - there was a time that one used a postman to ask a question and wait for a reply before autumn changed to winter.

You don't need a vented loop there.

Put the vented loop between the water pump">raw water pump and the heat exchanger, as high as you can and in the center of the boat if possible. You will have to replace the Yanmar hose that runs from the output of the raw water pump to the engine. Assuming the exhaust manifold is below the waterline, you need the loop before the manifold to prevent the water from just slowly filling the raw water system by virtue that it's all below the water.

I believe that would be acceptable and would probably be much easier to plumb up. My exhaust elbow is about 6" above the waterline but too close to be comfortable so I'm installing one anyway.

To the shift cable issue... are you SURE that the trans doesn't allow the entire shift assemble to be switched to the other side? That is a common solution. Otherwise, can you put the waterlift in a different place? If so, then...

come off the elbow with a rubber 45 deg pointing down and towards the center of the boat - run hose from that to the muffler and mount the muffler on the opposite side that you now have it on. You might need a second 45 at the muffler, but that would leave room for a good run at the shift arm.
