As I say, those pictures are not my engine but grabbed from this video:

He does not mention the collars or that the gasket is on top of them. In the video he jumps from that picture to head back on engine. But the collars and hole sizes and position are the same as my engine. It was a double check with his video. My engine pictures would look the same as the screen grabs above from the video.

Yes, I saw that reference, and watched the video but there’s something not quite right about this. I’d measure all the bolt holes on that headgasket to see if 2 of them are larger than the rest….. at the moment you’ll be using the cylinder head as a big wad punch… it’ll probably work just fine but suggest you do a dummy run, no gasket just to see if those two collars on the studs fit perfectly into the head.

Re: Engine seems to start but rolls to a stop

I did do a dummy run and it fits fine with no gasket. However, I'm next going to examine the underside holes where the collar goes in and see if it is different. in his video he clearly has the same issue as me but goes straight from "here's the gasket" to "now the head is on".

Also, I have the original gasket! I'll check the holes in that.

Old gasket / new gasket

Here is the old one on my engine: https://youtube.com/shorts/hyfWgqC9h...eFZjPFMQ6IgBrM

Shaving off just a little and it would fit

Just a little shaved off the hole will do it.

You guys are doing so well!!
I am just butting in to comment on the collar on that head stud.It looks like a locating device to assure that you get the gasket & head at the correct position/orientation.
There should be one hole in the gasket and head larger than the rest-to fit over that sleeve. However, some aftermarket gaskets are not always perfect copies of orig.
Keep up the great work.
Soon you will have it running...Bukh-a,Bukh-a,Bukh-a.......(couldn't resist)
Cheers/Len

Thanks Len, yeah, I'm feeling there is little in it and will skim a little off the gasket hole. It's so worth all this work, be so nice to have the engine work properly at last.

Good work Justin, you’re just about there now. I now know a lot more about Bukhs than I did before.

Ah, so I have refitted the head only to find a pushrod isn't moving.

It could be that the pushrod missed the socket in the follower but more likely is a stuck cam follower, tap it back down after pouring some oil over it…. Tap it gently then roll the engine over to push it up again, and repeat, and repeat, unless its really badly rusted in place you will prevail.
