Engine left idling without water

Dear all

I have a Yanmar 2ym15
When I was getting the boat out of the water, the engine was accidently left idling in the crane. Don't ask why
We notice it after about 15 minutes and shut it off. No overheating alarm or signs of overheating and it sounded normal with no particularly visible smoke when we switched it off. I am hopeful nothing really bad happened, but of course I need to check the engine.

I know the impeller is probably toast, and I need to check the muffler.

What do I look for when checking the muffler?

Is there anything else to check before trying to start it again?

Thanks, René

Re: Engine left idling without water

Check the muffler to see if it melted (unlikely though at idle).

Other than that, because you were at idle, the exhaust temperatures were really low, so you got off lucky.

Change the impeller (make sure you’ve got all the parts of the old one) and start the engine…..you’ll be fine.

New impeller (possibly a full water pump wet-end rebuild), inspect or replace anything rubber or plastic in the exhaust system. Then monitor for any signs of an issue next time it's run.

Rene, you might also check the exhaust hose from the exhaust manifold to the water muffler for any separation by feeling it or pull the manifold end and look down.

Do a check as some have said unlikely to be any issue other the. Impeller.

Hope you don't have a plastic Vetus muffler.

Lack of sufficient cooling water will do it every time, a simple exhaust temperature alarm may help to prevent this ,not nice .⚓️⛵️

Re: Engine left idling without water

Thank you for the reply's. I'll go over the suggestions. The muffler is a canister style, but I don't know whether it is constructed of plastic bits inside.

Regarding what happened; we were taking the boat out of the water and the crane operator was in a hurry and being very vocal about it, even though there was plenty of time in our scheduled lift. We even hit the lifting bay 5 minutes early.
So, instead of him just letting me get things sorted, he was commanding me around. I remember pushing the button, but over the noise from the crane and him yelling, I got flustered and couldn't hear the engine, so I must have released the button early.

Totally my fault, but lesson learned. If someone rushes things, stay calm, go a bit slower and stand up for yourself.

That doesn't tell us much. What material is it made of ? a photo would help.

Interesting, that!

Tell us exactly where this happened? It doesn't sound to me like it was your fault at all. If someone I've hired to do a job - any kind a job - tries to boss me around, I get "difficult". Even if I have to do so in Danish :-)!

Had a lift operator laid a trip like that on me, there could well have been a significant delay in the yard's operations.

There may not be enuff money involved in the repairs in this case to make a legal knees-up worthwhile, so the best plan is probably just to get on with life.

Håber du får det gjort i orden både hurtigt og billigt :-)

Re: Engine left idling without water

Thanks, good news is that there isn't even visible damage to the impeller. It will get changed of course before trying to run it.

Regarding the exhaust type, I couldn't get a picture, but it looks like this:

I don't want to share location as I don't want to expose anybody for having a bad day. And I still do feel responsible for it. It was just one of those things that can happen, as you said life goes on. If it is really bad I think insurance will cover it.

I suggest you remove the end caps from that muffler and inspect both sides of the hose. I have seen those hoses look fine on the outside but with huge delaminated blisters on the inside. Likely ok (tough stuff) but worth a look

Re: Engine left idling without water

Honestly the first part to depart is where steam collects like head gasket and muffler. It likely didn’t get that hot. I would change the oil now but that’s normal winter storage stuff.
Air cooled motors built with cast iron take crazy temps. You can feel the run better as they cool down. Your oil did a great job pulling away heat.
