Damper plate - which way?

I've got a yanmar 3HM35F and a Kanzaki transmission.

I'm replacing the damper plate.

Which way does it go when attaching to the flywheel? I've seen several user manual diagrams. They are unclear and contradictory.

One picture shows flat side of disc towards flywheel. The other shows flat side towards trans.

Any help?

Re: Damper plate - which way?

I’ve always done flat side to the fly wheel.

I agree, it places the splines closer to the front bearing in the transmission farther up the shaft possibly relieving a tiny amount of stress and flex.

The images on pages 10-31 and 10-32 of the Service Manual http://www.jeanneau-owners.com/Manua...e%20Manual.pdf might make the installation more clear than those in the Parts Manual

Re: Damper plate - which way?

Mount it the same way the original plate was mounted.

The side which you show in the picture of the original plate was away from the flywheel.

If you expand his pictures it actually shows it both ways, one with center section toward the flywheel another with it away. Lots of flywheels don't have room for the center section to face the flywheel.

Perhaps you misread my post...what I suggested was to mount it the same way as the ORIGINAL plate.....

From the photo of the actual original plate ( not the drawings) you can see where the bolt heads marked the steel of the damper, which indicates which way it was mounted.

I got that I just found it interesting that the illustrations showed both ways

Re: Damper plate - which way?

According to Yanmar, it doesn't matter. I was rebuiliding a 2GM that had been inundated in rainwater standing inside the boat for several years, so sand like aluminum oxide had totally filled the engine transmission cavity, making it imperative that I break the aluminum housing between the two, thinking I would just have to replace it. I subsequently found that they no longer made this item, nor did they have it in stock. They did have the newer version of it, however, but it was deeper than the original one had been, meaning that if I were to install the new damper plate in the same direction that the old one had been, there would be no engagement with the transmission splines. In other words, "flat side" pointing toward the transmission. So I had to ask. This is Japan, where they make these parts and the local Yanmar shop is just down the street from me. I was told that it didn't matter. Either direction is fine. So I flipped it so the engagement problem was solved, and it worked just fine. Problem solved!

Re: Damper plate - which way?

I know this is an old thread. After looking through the pictures and service manual, this seems like a doable project. A few questions on replacing the damper plate/flex coupling,

Do you have to remove the transmission or can you just slide away from the engine housing? Should I unbolt the shaft flange?

How much space do you need to unbolt the damper plate from the flywheel? Can this be done without removing the transmission and about 4" separation?

What is the torque on the bolts?

In general, assuming no problems with access or frozen bolts, how long should this job take?

Do you need to realign the engine/shaft after reassembly?

Are there OEM or after-market parts? The Yanmar 177070-03501 is $480

Any gotchas?

Thanks I may do this before we splash this fall.
