Airfilter Volvo Penta MD2030

Hello fellow cruisers,

On one of my Volvo Penta MD2030, the airfilter ruptured.. The flimsy foamy cup, that holds the steel spring is gone and where I am at this moment (Jamaica) i wont have time for land expeditions to find this piece, so i am back in McGyver mode: what kind of material i can use to fabricate myself a decent enough filter untill i can spend a bundle on the geniune Volvo part for this flimsy piece. I did run the engine without the filter, and was surprised by the force of the air that is actualy sucked in, so the material that i will use must be rather resistant. Any friends out there with practical ideas? Thank you so much in advance.

Re: Airfilter Volvo Penta MD2030

Are you anywhere near an auto parts store? Look for an aftermarket cone filter like Official K&N Canada Store - Performance Air Filters and Air Intake Systems and see if you can adapt that. If not how about paper coffee filters on the out side of a cotton t shirt rag. T shirt to hold shape and protect against ingesting the coffee filter paper should it come apart. there should be a metal spring inside the foam that will help hold the shape. You are probably not in a dusty area so the intake air should be relatively clean.
Just my thoughts.

Pieter,
Go to an auto parts store and buy a cone air filter.
Clamps on with a hose clamp.

DRS and Cotemar, thanks so much for the input. Before leaving for Cuba on Wednesday morning, i hope to find an autopart shop with this type filter, otherwise old Tshirt and coffee filter it is...

Re: Airfilter Volvo Penta MD2030

We also use standard automotive paper filters for our MD2030. Ours are can-shaped and not cone-shaped, but it doesn't make any difference. If it doesn't fit exactly on the end of the intake hose, just use tape to adjust the diameter and put a screw or two through it.

Never repurchase the Volvo filter - it is a piece of crap.
