Sailing more than 40,000 miles so far, I never considered our helm exposed. The helm on a Catana certainly looks exposed.

I think light cats make great offshore cruising boats. You can pick up a 20 year old Outremer 55 light for less and they are fast and solid boats. Several are circumnavigating now.

While I'm sure the outreamer is a very nice boat, I'm betting branding is the bulk of the cost difference.

I feel this maybe true more than we realize. Economy of scale must play a role.

Possibly economies of scale since Outremer only builds about 20 boats a year and Leopard, Lagoon, and FP build hundreds of catamarans each year, but I don't know what you mean about "branding." Light boats cost more to build. That is the bulk of the cost difference. Outremer is one of three boat builders in the Allures group and I imagine any adder for the brand would be small if at all.

Horses for courses. That is much like asking why get a Land Rover when a Jetta will get you around as well. No disparagement, I've owned several Jettas. I just would not take one off-road.

We bought a used Antares 44i which was 150% the price of some similar new production cats new. No disparaging the other cats, we have chartered them in the past and enjoyed ourselves. We have just put 13,000 voyaging miles on our boat, living on the boats for many months at a time, and anything less than an Antares would have been a mistake for us.

Seawind vs. Outremer is like Fiat vs Ferrari.

Like Xquisite vs. Lagoon.

Like HR vs. Bava.

You get what you pay for.

Surely you meant "along with Allures is one of the 4 boat builders in the Grand Large group"?

Agree with you tho.

Yep, that is right. 4 boat builders under GLY in the leisure market, Outremer, Gunboat (next door in La Grande Motte), Allures, and Garcia.

My 42 foot Crowther catamaran no. 226 is for sale. Price is 230 000 $US. The boat is build to German Lloyd class. I think the boat is too cheap.

I'm not always sure you get what you pay for? We all have opinions of course, but few of us have thoroughly crawled through many of the boats we have opinions of let alone sailed them, most of us are just regurgitating internet knowledge, I'm not saying you are.

Form what it is worth. I own a Dolphin 460. Bought her new in 2007 and could not be happier. I sailed her across the Atlantic from Brazil to Italy and have been cruising in the Med ever since. Love this boat for going to weather and as a second home for eight months of the year. Cruisers come by all the time to tell me that Finalmente is one of the nicest looking cats they have ever seen. She looks fast and is fast, but has everything a well equipped apt has. Just saying.

Some 3000 Sq Ft houses are double the price of others. Same reasons.

Doesn't equate to a better boat. I have enough that I have found wrong with brand new Lagoons (even the Seventy7), and FPs that I have been asked to not speak up on because "those are exceptions to the expected quality of our brand". If you've been to a boat show from a prospective owner standpoint, you know these words mean bad things.

I would go on, but look at it like this, I lived in the US and Canada, not everything made in these two countries with their skilled labour and modern tech available to superpowers, ends up a useful or necessarily high end product. Heck, there are maple wood products made in Canada that I would love to ask the manufacturer what they were thinking.

Yes, living standards are different between countries but to say that a French built boat is going to be head and shoulders above one built in Argentina or Vietnam is a gross overestimation.

You're in Fort Lauderdale, I wouldn't even be on the forums, I'd be floating like a madman. Then there would be a headline saying "Florida man will not come off boat, claims mainland is lava".
