Selling a Catamaran in Australia

We are a couple with two small kids from Germany and we are thinking about buying a catamaran in the Mediterranean and selling it (2015) in Australia after a two years family sabbatical. It should be an ocean going catamaran in the size between 39ft and 46ft. Because our sailing time is limited, we make our thoughts about the sale of the yacht.

Who has an idea, which European brand and type can be sold best in Australia?

How old should the yacht be a maximum of?

Is there someone down under who wants to purchase a specific European catamaran in 2015, that we can go for it?

Thanks for any advice

Martin

Re: Selling a catamaran in Australia

Lagoon and FP would be the best sellers in Aus. Forget Prouts etc
Like anything, the age is only relevant to each buyer and their wallet vs your wallet.
Please read up on the taxes etc so you aren't disappointed. At the time of writing a Euro built boat will cost you Import Duty and GST when you get it here. Click on this link for info importing a yacht

OH you can do some price comparisons here.. www.boatpoint.com.au Probably the largest boating site in aus.

Good luck and enjoy the trip

Re: Selling a catamaran in Australia

I agree with Ozskipper above, the large production cats, FP and Lagoon are the most popular.

We looked at a lot of boats and were watching the market closely before we purchased our cat, a new Lagoon 450. Most that we looked at up to 12 months ago are still on the market. You need to remember that our population here in Australia is quite small. And our economy is a patchwork economy with mining doing well and the rest a bit patchy. So you need to either be flexible enough to wait a while for a sale or discount to meet the market.

On the east coast, the two biggest dealers are Vicsail (Lagoon) in Sydney and Multihull Solutions (FP) in Queensland. If you email them, they can probably give you an accurate assessment of what is selling in the current market.

I've heard there are shiploads of second hand Euro boats arriving here every week now. Prices will become lower as these hit the market. You may have missed the boat!

Re: Selling a catamaran in Australia

2015 is a fair way away.

I've found that there aren't many FP's in Australia that I can see or at least people aren't selling them often.

Very hard to find an Antigua 37 or Athena 38. Not many about of the bigger ones either like Lavezzi's or Lipari's.

Met two guys in Brisbane that have already done that trick twice! They are off to do it again this after they sell the latest yacht. Seems noone wants to do the pirate leg so they buy in the med and sell here. So Aus becomes the dumping ground. Good if you want to buy especially if you have Aus $.

How long is a piece of string,

3 years is a long time in the world of finance,

It could be Better or it could be worse, than it is now,

Your best bet for selling in OZ, is Sydney, NSW or the Whitsundays, Qld,

Thats where the Multi's hang out.

Free trade agreement Countrys with OZ, no duty payable, 10 % GST is,

Other Countrys, with out the Free trade agreement, Duty is payable,

Good luck with it any way, Enjoy your cruise,

Cheers,
Brian,

Re: Selling a catamaran in Australia

I was wondering about OZ's free trade agreement's so I Googled them and here they are.
ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand FTA
Australia-Chile FTA
Australia-New Zealand Closer Economic Relations
Australia-United States FTA
Singapore-Australia FTA
Thailand-Australia FTA
There are others under consideration.
Australia's Trade Agreements | Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

Buying a boat on the US west coast seems worthwhile from what I've read here. Or just buy that new Atlantic 57 from Chile.
Edit: I realize my individual links don't work so go to the Australian Govs page and they are there.

What is a free trade agreement?
I am Australian and bought a yacht in the Uk im living on now in Europe,
I am preparing it to sail back to Australia eventually via the carribean,
That is if i make it back to Australia as i keep getting side tracked and just following my nose at the minute.
My fear is import tax and boat valuation etc.

Re: Selling a catamaran in Australia

Usually these require that the goods are made in these countries. Not just purchased in them.

That is correct to claim exemption to Import duty you need an original Certificate of Origin (COO) from the manufacturer of the goods in the Exempt country of Origin. I land a couple of dozen containers a month and each exempt shipment needs this (COO) to import without paying import duty, each certificate costs approx $60 AUD, this is for new manufactured goods.

Re: Selling a Catamaran in Australia

Thank you all for your helpful advice. From an European point of view, when I watch the Australian yacht market on the Internet, I'm a little surprised about the high currently asking prices.

Has someone an idea, how much percent on average the actual sale price is lower than the currently asking prices?

Martin

Depends on the boat, brand and model and condition. But anyone who thinks that ther is a 30% drop between ask and sell, - well in the time ohonoured words of Darryll Kerrigan, tell em he's dreamin.

Re: Selling a Catamaran in Australia

All depends on exchangerate.
3 years ago the Rate was 1€ to 2$ now it's 1€ to 1,20$.
That's why it's very interesting for the aussies to import european boats.
But nobody knows what is like in the future.
