Probably a Dumb Question: Why Are Edel Cats So Inexpensive ?

I thought if I wanted to double my cruising kitty, then I would have to halve the purchase price. I'm seeing a lot of Edel cats that are in fact 1/2 of what I was going to spend, please folks, tell me the reason.

I don't know anything about Edel cats but check the bridge deck high off the water some older cats are too low and get a lot of wave banging. I know I should be talking HA because I have a Gemini and it bangs some. The banging brings down the price quickly.

I agree if your XM is tuned to Jimmy Buffet and turned up loud enough there is no sound and you have no problem. Go sail it to windward and make your choice. All cats sail down wind good but some don't point to wind very good.

As much as I would like a 10 year or newer cat, I'm a singlehander and as such no insurance company will insure it for any passage. I wouldn't finance anyway, but for retirement after cruising I would hope to still have the boat to sell, but 2nd worse case scenario would be losing the boat but surviving, so need to decide how big a hit my retirement funds could stand. Under $200,000 loss would hurt but I could still live on my balance, but a $350,000 hit would put me eating potatoes for my retirement. If money wasn't such an issue, I'd pick up that A masted SMG 50 "Number One" for $550,000, and be one happy camper. I really like the A mast and hybrid aux.

Chiming in on the concept of a cheaper boat. I agree with the idea. Rather than wait to cash up for the perfect boat. My plans include buying an older- lesser boat and going sooner and staying away longer.

How ironic. After years sailing commercially by other's schedules and ports, I've never set foot in either Oz or Kiwi-land. I got tired of speaking in 2nd and 3rd languages no better than a 5 year old, but when I arrive on your shores, easy communication.

I dont know which cats you were looking at. But I notice that the edels at the bottom prices on yachtworld are all pod style cats. In other words the bridge deck and hulls dont appear to be integrated. To get from the port hull to the starboard you have to "go outside" each time. Or at least, it appears that way.

The older Edels had extremely low bridgedeck clearance. Inches not feet. Check out the pic.

Also Webofficer, check out this forum on the new Tag 60 hybrid. 4 mil dollars and it frickin caught fire on it's maiden voyage. Hybrid may be for you but it is not for me. I can't see the point of paying more money to go slower with less reliability.

The older Edels with the pods do have a low bridgedeck clearance. The open bridgedeck Edels have great bridgedeck clearance, just imagine if you were to remove the pod in the picture. The older Edels were pretty basic boats. The ones I know of were solid glass and are considered beam boats. Three parts, two hulls and a bridgedeck structure attached to three beams and bolted together. They sail very well and have a nice motion which I contribute to the fact that the hulls are able to move independently of one another.
