PIRATE MITIGATION

So what is the thinking concerning how to deal with local fishermen who decide to fish for your boat stuff?

Most of the cats out there have decided that the access doors to the salon have to be:
1> Glass sliding doors
2> as big as they can possibly be
3> easy to open - really nothing more than home style doors

This type of door would be fairly easy to breech for a determined pirate.

There are some boats that have serious doors that can be locked from the inside with steel bars or even submarine style latches. The Prout comes to mind in that access door can be reinforced with steel bars and very hard to break thru....makes sense but poor visuals and ventilation issues.

Most cats have glass doors. What can be done for a glass sliding door?

Besides having a 12 gauge shotgun on board - what is the best way to deal with Pirates?

A Doberman Pinscher!

Seriously, a large dog on board can be quite the deterrent. At least the average thief will be scared off, the professional thief will be prepared to deal with a dog.
Dogs can be both a pain in the butt when clearing into a country but what they give in return can make living aboard more rewarding.

Re: PIRATE MITIGATION

Nothing says "please rob me" like sailing a sparkly pleasure palace into known pirate- or thief-infested areas.

Hopefully cat-owners will chime in with their mods for better-secured doors.

Lake Effect
as the world slides ever closer to a depression - those at the lowest end struggle and may turn from an honest living to a life of crime on the high seas. So one never knows where a pirate might appear.

The question is how does one prepare for such an event. I pray it never happens - but hunger is a big motivator.

For the paranoid out there I think a submarine would be perfect. You can sit back on your couch and look through your periscope at the world around you. If anybody annoys you....fire a torpedo!!!

I've been involved in hundreds of boat repo's. I don't care what you do, I can get in within a few minutes.

Haven't done the repos, but agree, have not yet found a boat that can keep me out.

Same also for a house. What do you do with sliding glass doors on your house to prevent land pirates? Do the same thing on your boat.

And if the answer is "I live in a gated community where security guards keep out the land pirates" then take that into consideration when you choose your cruising grounds.

I always love how, when observing how the world slides ever closer to a depression, the discussion here moves towards "how to protect my toys when I inflict my privileged butt on the suffering 3rd world", and/or "moar gunz".

So, no-one is interested in working together on not sliding into global ruin? Guess not.

Careful, guys, you're getting very close to a political debate, which will get the whole thread deleted.

You won't hear further from me. Hopefully there will be some constructive ideas raised for improving locks etc on cruising boats.
