Phased out charter catamarans. Where do they go?

Wondering where all these catamarans that get pushed out of charter fleets by new ones go. Up for sale or to other charter companies, or where?

I am hearing mor and more about a bunch of catamarans in this phase out situation. Too many catamarans out there...

Re: Phased out charter catamarans. Where do they go?

wNothing unusual (except that catamaran sale prices are much better than monohull prices).

The charter companies have been phasing out boats for 40 years. They used to be all monohulls - now they are mostly catamarans. These are all privately owned. At the end of the five year contract with the charter company the owner gets the choice of keeping the boat for themselves, selling it, or trying to find another charter company that will take it (very little of the latter these days). Prices of cats coming off charter seem to be holding well.

The demand for used catamarans is weaker than the crazy hot times during Covid but is still stronger than the historical average - likely because the price of new ones has gone up about 25% since Covid began. I expect phased out catamaran prices will drop some more but owners will still be getting the 50% of what they paid for it that they were told to expect when they started the 5 year contract.

The cat builders are still operating at 100% of capacity so we may eventually build up too much supply - unless a hurricane takes a few hundred off the market.
