Not Sure What We Have....

So, the story of my jeep trade got even weirder! I went to register my new 39' trimaran at AAA and noticed that the make/model on the pink slip said "Earindil" which is what the previous owners told me the name of the boat was. Previous owners also told me it was a Horstman trimaran because that's what they were told, that's what their insurance said, and that's what mine now says. AAA told me I need paperwork or a blueprint to change it back to normal.

Here's where the real kicker comes in. I've noticed that it doesn't look like an Ed Horstman Tristar, nor any of the old layouts on his site. I emailed Ed Horstman and sent him these pictures. He said that it's not one of his designs or builds. I was shocked! It doesn't look like a Jim Brown to me, doesn't seem like a Piver either, maybe a custom Norman Cross build? Anyone recognize her?

Yeah the dmv out here is a nightmare. The Autoclub is worth the tow service alone. Dmv services are worth the perk.

What does your friend have?

Re: Not Sure What We Have....

Lots of tris were modified designs back then. Did you title and register it as Earindil? Perhaps that is what you have. FWIW those hobbits were great boat builders.

Re: Not Sure What We Have....

Umm, not to quibble, but Earindil was the farthest thing from a hobbit, he was halfelven. His father was a man, his mother was the daughter of the king of the elves.
And hobbits generally had nothing to do with boats, with the exception or a very few that lived along the Brandywine river.

Looks like a builder modified the plans for a Piver. Piver designed to allow for the use of plywood sheets. Resulting in fairly straight lines and pointy sharp corners.

Assuming the boat was previously state registered the should be a Hull ID that you can use to look up who the manufacturer was. If the boat was documented then the CG papers would be another source. Just a thought.

Re: Not Sure What We Have....

My guess is it would be a Piver. His designs were all V hulls, to making building them easier. Norman Cross boats were slightly more sophisticated. Yours appears to be just V shaped hulls, which makes me think Arthur Piver. There was a book written by Robert Harris on trimarans and there designers, himself being one. I read it many times, but right now I can't think of the title. It was written some time in the early seventies. Yours look great! Good luck with her!

Re: Not Sure What We Have....

I am pretty sure she is a one off. Only a few Pivers had crown in their decks, most cruising Pivers were flat decked. She certainly is no Hortsman, they are always round bilge. She is not a Jim Brown, he did a series of designs called Off Soundings before the Searunners. And not a Cross either.

She has a very fine main hull stern which makes her stand out amongst tris. My thinking is that she is a self designed and built trimaran, but not of a known breed.

I do not know the make, but is a nice looking design and it is dog friendly, so there is that.

Re: Not Sure What We Have....

Hmmm interesting. I will pull the hull id and do a search.

I pulled off all the interior panels and the rest of the foam insulation. We wiped everything and are treating some mold that was under the foam. We now have a way better look at what needs repair. I started cutting and pulling out the old electrical wires. Much of it was wired so poorly and secured with partially protruded screw heads.

Re: Not Sure What We Have....

So I pulled the Hull ID # from the pink slip and it's only a 6 digit number. Every search that I have found requires a 3 digit manufacturer code as well.....but I'm trying to find out the manufacturer.

Re: Not Sure What We Have....

It was owner built so no manufacturer code. Back then they let you call it and register it just about anyway you want. Did you register it? Can you register it the way it is?

Oh ok. That makes sense. I'm going to see if the DMV has a record change of the name at some point but at this point I guess it's not a big deal. It is registered and insured the way it is.
