Im in disagreement here . you can get a 32-35' cat that costs less has the same or more room and accommodations w out living in a cave and much more comfortable at anchor and all but one point of sail.

I agree. This has been discussed to death on here, but volume-for-volume, and quality-for-quality, cats and monos cost about the same. It is a big fallacy to compare cats and monos of the same length -- that's just not applicable since cats have two hulls and will have much greater beam than a mono of like length.

Cost should not really be a big issue in the choice between cat and mono.

But which would you be comfortable taking off shore a 32-35 cat or a SO40. By off shore I am thinking east coast Australia.

Re: Mono vs Multi!

Interesting views...my wife likes the mono so I guess I'm lucky. I've sailed back from Hawaii 3 times and as sailors who have sailed back to NA know the first week or so is hard on the wind in order to get above the high pressure. If I had a cat I would want something that could go upwind, I can't tell you how many times I've had to sail hard on the wind offshore.

I would contend that dollars are the main handicapping feature when deciding which boat to plunk your cash down on. The more money you have the more you can bet. Until you get past $100k or so the choices are pretty limited. With a few spare million and you can even race for the Americas Cup.

I think I could buy a pretty decent used monohull for $100k, tough to find a good multihull for that.

I would happily post some photos on mono for You, Cotemar, but do not want to burden other Mods with more work.
But still if You want, You can go this way. Slightly longer, will take two steps

Does it mean that cat retains the value better than mono?
Just curious, I never had a look at this.

Catamarans seem to hold their value a little better that a mono hull for a few reasons.

There are far more mono hull boats for sail, so supply and demand kick in here.

Catamarans are pretty much made to order. They do not tend to have extra supply or inventory.

Catamarans tend to have more creature comforts and larger entertaining areas, which cost more to make and are reflexed in a higher selling price.
